Why is There Fog in a Mechanical Watch? How to Deal with It?

Jul 25,2022/Maintenance

The watch is water resistant but will fog up if the surface is cold or hot. It's the physical reaction in your watch. The water on the surface cannot get in, but the inner side reflects small water droplets. What's going on here, let's find out!

1. What is the matter with the fog in the mechanical watch?

There is fog in the watch, indicating that there is moisture in the watch. Under normal circumstances, if there is a small amount of moisture in the mechanical watch, the human eye cannot observe it. Although the watch is sealed, there will still be extremely fine pores at the joint between the crown and the handle, the joint between the back cover and the case, and the joint between the cover and the case, especially the old watch, the pores are larger.

When washing hands, doing laundry or encountering rain, water vapor can penetrate into the case from these pores. In addition, in summer, the temperature is high and the humidity is high. If the watch is suddenly cold, the air with more moisture in the mechanical watch will condense into mist or water droplets and stick to the wrist watch glass. Knowing what happened to the fog in the mechanical watch, it is time to solve it, just like the fog in the mechanical watch, how to solve it?

2. How to solve the problem of fog entering the mechanical watch?

If there is fog or water droplets in the wrist watch, it should be repaired in time, wipe off the fog or water droplets, or wrap the watch tightly with toilet paper or moisture-absorbing flannel, and bake it near a 40W light bulb (about 5cm) for about half an hour. The water inside will turn into water vapor.

In addition, you can remove the fog by basking in the sun, poke the head of the mechanical watch, and put toilet paper or flannel around the head, and let it dry in the sun for about 5 hours. The toilet paper or flannel can remove the water vapor in the movement. , in case of prolonged exposure to water, the dial becomes discolored, and the movement rusts. If there is a little fog occasionally, it will disappear naturally after the climate is dry.

But this is only a temporary solution, not the root cause. If there is a problem with the wrist watch itself, it will still enter the water and mist, so it is best to take it for maintenance and observe what is wrong.
