Will Wearing a Watch on the Right Hand Become a Trend?

Mar 02,2022/Buying Guides

On July 9, 1916, an article entitled "The Status of Watches Has Changed" was published in the New York Times. "European newspapers have published a lot of topics about watchband watches as part of military equipment. This has attracted a lot of attention because modern war has proved the necessity for officers and soldiers to know the time," wrote the reporter. In fact, in the beginning, many people thought it was a joke to wear watches. However, now, since war preparation has become a slogan, watches have become a necessary part of soldiers' equipment. The status of quartz dress watches is changing. The trend of wearing watches is developing rapidly. People who used to laugh at wristwatches also put them on, abandoning pocket watches.

Ⅰ. Reasons for wearing a quartz dress watch on the left hand

Elite quartz watches have become ubiquitous portable timing tools. Most of the time, it is worn on the left wrist. We don't know why. Was it worn on the left hand at the beginning, or worn on the left hand later?

Many people think this is due to the wearer's habitual hand and writing style. And who will wear quartz dress watches in their right hands? Generally speaking, they are left-handed.

Considering that 90% of people are right-handed and not only write with their right hands but also do many other things with their right hands, it makes sense that the design concept of the quartz dress watch has always been consistent with the left hand. Of course, there are still right wrist wearers. Michael Collins, the Apollo 11 command module astronaut, is left-handed. His watch is always worn on his right wrist.

Ⅱ. Reasons for a trend to wear quartz dress watches on the right hand

We found that there is such an interview. They interviewed some people wearing watches and asked why they wore quartz dress watches on their left or right hands. Here are some excerpts.

"My wife wears it on the right. She always wears it, but she's not left-handed. My father wears it on the right, too, but he's left-handed."

"I'm left-handed, but I wear my watch on the left because if I don't do that, I will feel that I cannot be integrated into the society."

"I write with my left hand, but I still wear my watch on my left hand because I hardly write anymore."

No more writing can be noticed from the last one. Indeed, most of today's writing is done by typing on mobile phones or computers, and handwriting has been replaced by typing to a great extent. In other words, the movement of our hands is reduced to the movement of our fingers. People are getting lazier.

However, this makes us wonder whether there will be a trend to wear quartz dress watches more frequently on the right wrist, just because one prefers appearance and feel. Without handwriting, many motives for wearing watches on the left wrist disappear.
